This article provides some examples of Environmental KPIs
KPIs help you measure the progress and effectiveness of your EMS. KPIs are often aligned with objectives. They also provide clarity and focus for your team, allowing you to identify areas that may need more attention or resources.
KPIs should be measured on a regular basis using a consistent approach for data collection. This could be monthly or, in line with the regular Management Review Meetings.
The methods selected for data collection (including who and when) should produce comparable and reproducible results to be considered valid. The results should be recorded and analysed in such a way that they can then be reviewed in your management review meetings.
Examples of KPI’s:
1. Energy & Carbon Emissions:
- Average electricity consumption per employee (kWh/month)
- Estimated CO₂ emissions per employee from home office energy use (kg CO₂e/FTE)
- % of employees using renewable energy at home (self-reported or incentivised via company programs)
- Reduction in CO₂ emissions from avoided commuting (tonnes CO₂e saved/year)
2. Environmental complaints - Each environmental complaint should be logged. This would usually be captured in a ticketing system. It is recommended to monitor the trend.
3. Staff have read all policies by the due date - this shows that staff are aware of what is expected of them and the consequences of not adhering to environmental policies. Records of policy attestation are held in the Adoptech portal.
4. Non-compliances - whilst continuous improvement is an integral part of ISO 14001, a good way to measure the effectiveness of the EMS is to monitor the number of Non conformances.
5. Improve Supply chain sustainability - % of suppliers (e.g., SaaS, cloud services, hardware vendors) with ISO 14001 or equivalent environmental certifications.
