What is GDPR?

Understand what GDPR and Data Privacy means

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation.

It's a comprehensive data protection law that came into effect in the European Union (EU) on May 25, 2018.

GDPR aims to strengthen data protection and privacy for individuals within the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) by regulating how organisations handle and process personal data.

It applies to all companies processing the personal data of individuals residing in the EU, regardless of the company's location.

GDPR imposes strict requirements on organisations regarding consent, data protection measures, data breach notification, and individuals' rights over their personal data. Non-compliance with GDPR can result in significant fines and penalties.

GDPR is one form of data privacy legislation. Data privacy legislation similar to GDPR is starting to be adopted in many other countries outside the EU. To understand how Brexit has impacted UK Data Privacy legislation, follow Adoptech's Data Privacy framework.
