How do I create a custom test?

How do I add my own compliance test?

Adoptech lets you create your own tests when the built-in framework tests don't cover something specific to your organisation. Custom tests work just like standard ones — they can be assigned an owner, linked to Checks and Controls, and run manually — but you're in full control of the setup.

There are two ways to create a custom test, depending on whether you already know which Check it belongs to.

Before you start

  • You'll need the Security Manager or Security Editor role to create a custom test.

Option 1: From a Control's Check

Use this option if you want the test automatically linked to a specific Check as soon as it's created.

  1. Go to Compliance > Frameworks and open the framework containing your Control.
  2. Open the relevant Control, then open the Check you want to add a test to. This opens the Check drawer.
  3. In the Check drawer, find the Tests card and select Manage Tests.
  4. In the Add Test modal, select Add Test. This opens the New Test drawer, already linked to this Check.

Option 2: From the Tests tab

Use this option if you want to create a standalone test first and link it to a Check later.

  1. Go to Compliance and select the Tests tab.
  2. Select Add Test in the top right. This opens the New Test drawer.

Note: a test created this way isn't linked to any Check yet. You'll need to link it afterwards from the test's Relationships tab.

Filling in the New Test drawer

Whichever option you used, the New Test drawer works the same way:

  • Test Name (required) — the only field you need to create the test.
  • Owner — assign a colleague responsible for the test (optional, can be added later).
  • Category — classify the test from the available categories (optional).

You don't need to fill in everything now — you can create a test with just a name and add checks or a Q&A pair later.

Select Create to finish.

What happens next

  • Your test is created immediately with a pending status — there's no approval step.
  • If created from a Check (Option 1), it appears in that Check's Tests list right away with a pencil icon (marking it as a manually created test, unlike the sync icon used for automatic tests). If created from the Tests tab (Option 2), it won't appear under any Check until you link one.
  • You can run it any time using Run Single Test, or edit it later to add a description, frequency, or Q&A relationships.
  • Custom tests are specific to your organisation — other vendors on the platform won't see them.
  • Because it's a manual test, you can delete it later if you no longer need it (this isn't available for tests generated from a framework template).
